Best cameras for beginners

Walking into the world of photography can be exciting, but choosing the right camera is often the first big challenge. With so many brands, features, and price points, beginner photographers can easily feel overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start. I know I was.

The best cameras for beginners focus on simplicity, affordability, and strong image quality. The following cameras allow new photographers to learn the fundamentals, like lighting, composition, and exposure. It makes it easier to build confidence behind the lens without getting lost in complicated controls.

One of the best beginner camera brands for anything you want to shoot is Canon. Canon cameras that were released a couple of years ago are basic and simple to understand, and they don’t break your bank.

One of the best cameras for someone just starting their photography journey is a Canon EOS Rebel T7 DSLR. It is user-friendly and doesn’t have a lot of the more advanced settings that many of the other cameras have. It is also budget-friendly. Although it doesn’t have a touch screen, the image quality is great. This camera is best for portraits and still subjects.

If you want to shoot sports like baseball or soccer, I recommend a Canon EOS R50. The Canon EOS R50 is great for capturing the dust that gets kicked up after a slide or the grass that gets thrown after a golfer swings. It has a fast shutter speed (if you’re unsure what that means, I explain it in my “Camera Settings and What They Mean” blog post), auto-focuses and locks onto your subject, and the settings are simple to understand.

A great beginner camera for taking photos of nature and wildlife would be either the Canon R7 or the Nikon Z50. They both have excellent shutter speeds and great ISO ranges (Again, if you don’t know what that is, I explain it in another blog post).

The higher the FPS rate (frames per second), the better. The Canon R7 has a 15 FPS mechanical and a 30 FPS electronic, while the Nikon Z50 has an 11 FPS rate. When shooting animals that are in motion, the Canon R7 would be best, but when it comes to low light, the Nikon Z50 is better. It really just depends on what you are specifically looking for.

When it comes to camera lenses, it also depends on what you are shooting and how far you are standing from the subject. If you're shooting something pretty close to you, a perfect lens would be anywhere from 18-150mm. If you are shooting sports like tennis or basketball, a lens from 28-200mm would be your best bet. If you're shooting baseball and want to get photos of the outfielders, then a lens no less than 300mm is your best bet. When it comes to wildlife, getting photos of larger mammals would require a 300mm lens, while getting photos of birds or smaller mammals requires a 500mm lens.

The higher the mm, the higher the cost is going to be, so if you are really serious about photography, then be prepared to drop thousands of dollars on cameras, lenses, and different types of equipment to produce high-quality images. An average cost for a 100-500mm lens is about $2,000, depending on the camera brand and year it was made, and that does not include the camera body.

I use a Nikon Z5 to shoot everything. I have two lenses, one having a range of 28mm-75mm and the other being 28mm-200mm. The camera body and the 28mm-200mm lens were a package deal and cost around $1,200 total. The 28mm-75mm lens costs around $800.

Being a photographer isn’t cheap. If you’re serious about it, you should be prepared to spend thousands of dollars on equipment. Camera bodies, lenses with different focal lengths, and brand differences can all greatly affect the price. That being said, you can still take amazing photos, even without all the high-tech, super expensive gear that advanced photographers have.
